Stretto House Addition

Location

Dallas, Texas

Size

3700 SF

Design Architect

Max Levy

The Steven Holl-designed Stretto House has new owners and they wanted to expand the existing house.   They asked Max Levy, who was Holl’s local architect on the project. Levy’s team added three new bedrooms and three-screen porches to the house. The addition is connected to the house by a long, slender gallery. Instead of repeating the original roofscape of four concrete block bars, Levy introduced a series of cylindrical glass light monitors, each equipped with a “light sail” shading device. The addition retains the house’s original material palette of concrete block, aluminum plates, limestone paving, and lead-coated copper flashing.

Residential Design Magazine has an interesting article on the expansion project highlighting the importance of collaboration between the architect and the structural engineer.
