The Business Leadership Building at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton was required to accommodate enrollment growth. Its architectural vision was based on an academic village concept in which a group of campus-scaled buildings within the building surround a marketplace atrium. This structure, with so many unique and varying conditions, required creative collaboration between the architect and our structural engineers.
Unique qualities include: a grand marketplace atrium with spiral stairs, a green roof above the atrium, steel V-columns, irregular column spacing, long cantilevered corners, a classroom box, a short-span steel roof. The variety of design requirements were all addressed by developing a simple primary structural system that incorporates a cast-in-place concrete waffle slab.
