NorthPark Center, originally opened in 1965 by Raymond Nasher, is the largest shopping mall in Texas in terms of gross leasable. The facility more than doubled in size during a $92 million expansion completed by Datum and a creative design team of top Dallas firms.
The expansion’s design reflected the facility’s existing architecture, but on a grand and modern scale. Many ambitious structures were created during the renovation due to unique situations. The expansion included more than 25 new stores, a food court, and a sculpture garden. Cast-in-place concrete, post-tension concrete, masonry and steel construction were all incorporated. The central common area is cast-in-place concrete which resists the lateral loads. The second floor retail areas are created from composite steel framing connected to the central common area. This was a design that scheduled trades in an efficient fast track manner.
